Photography research for website

The images above show the home pages of two regional lifestyle magazine, the same genre as the magazine which I am going to create. A lot of the images on these pages include landscape shots showing an area within the region. This suggests that I should use a series of landscape shots on the site for my magazine as it will allow me to give my audience a clear idea of what the area which I am talking about looks like. This will also make it more interesting for the reader.

There are also a series of close up images showing part of the life in these areas. This is something that I may want to do when making my website as it will easily allow me to specifically target a younger audience as I can include objects which they will stereotypically find appealing, thus attracting them to my magazine.

Photography lighting research for the website

The advances in technology has had a huge impact on the way in which we take photos and the quality of the images produced. Before the development of digital technology, photographs used to be taken on rolls of film which would then need to be developed later in order to produce a hard copy of the image. This development has meant that the way in which the photographs can be edited has changed, allowing them to make almost any image perfect for it's purpose. This has led to the development of photo editing software such as Adobe's Photoshop package. This allows people to edit every detail on the photograph allowing me to make the image perfect for its use.

These changes in technology will allow me to take high quality images and then edit them to a very high standard in competition with professional publications and on professionally made websites.

On my website I will use predominantly use a series of outdoor shots and landscapes as these images will best show the theme behind my magazine which is life in Cornwall. The main attraction and beauty of Cornwall is it's vast open spaces and stunning beaches. The best way of capturing these times behind Cornish life is by taking photographs of these areas to be included on the website, which would involve me taking landscape and outdoor images.

This idea seems to be taken on by most professional lifestyle publications as they seem to use a lot of this type of image. However, some of them will often use models in a photoshoot environment on their website. I don't think I will use this sort of image because it would not usually appeal to my target audience because it can come across as boring.

Primary target audience research for the website

Website Survey Analysis

I have designed a survey for people to fill out so that I can find out what appeal to my target audience on a website. I designed my survey to have ten questions relating to websites so that I know how to attract them to my website when I come to designing it. Here are my results:

These results show that over two thirds of the people who complete my survey were male with 68.18% of the responses compared to 31.82% of the responses coming from females. This suggests that when I come to making my website I should include content which will appeal to a masculine audience rather than a feminine one as these people are the most likely to see the site. This should mean that my site will be more successful if I target this audience with the content, colours and style of the website.

These results show that the large proportion of the people who completed my survey were under the age of eighteen as 45.45% of the responses came from this category. A lot of the responses were not from people aged 35 and above. This suggests that I should design my site to appeal to a younger audience rather than an older one because these people will be my primary target audience.  I will appeal to these people by using the stereotyping set by years of media theory, which should attract this audience to my website.

These results are fairly varied but the most popular response came from the lowest category for average household income which was £0- 24.999. This took up the highest amount of responses out of all categories with 31.82% of the response. This suggests that my target audience lies within the middle and lower classes. This will have an impact on the sort of content which I will put on the site as I will need to appeal to this audience. Some content will stereotypically appeal to this audience better than others and I shouldn’t include content which costs a lot of money as it will alienate my target audience from this website as they will start to feel that this website is not meant to be aimed at them.

These results show that the large majority of the people who complete my survey were of a white/Caucasian ethnicity as 40.91% of the people who complete my survey came from this category. This suggests that I should include content and choose to features things such as colour which will stereotypically appeal to this audience. However, the rest of these results are fairly varied which means that if I want to appeal to the largest audience possible I must include a large variety of content and hope that there is something in there that appeals to everyone.

These results show that by far the most common response to my survey came from people with a heterosexual sexuality, as 71.43% of the people who responded lie within this category. This suggests that I should target a heterosexual audience as I will have an in depth knowledge of what appeals to this audience as they are the most common category. By targeting these people my website would stand more chance of being successful, as the results of my survey will show what they find appealing on the website for a regional magazine.

These results are much more spread out than previously analysed results. `However, the category that stood out the most in these results was ‘listening to music’ as 54.55% of the people who responded selected this option. This suggests that it would be a good idea to include a story about music on the website as this is the sort of article which my target audience will find appealing. Other popular categories included ‘watching films’ and ‘playing computer games’. Again it may be a good idea to feature content about these subjects because this will appeal to the large majority of  my target audience meaning there is a higher chance of my website being successful at appealing to my target audience.

These results show that 45.54% of the people asked like a horizontal navigation bar at the top of a webpage. This means that to appeal to the largest amount of my target audience possible I should use this from of navigation. This is because they know how to work this form of navigation and over complicating it may lead to confusion and frustration.

These results show that people like top see large images and a small amount of text on a website as these are the two most popular responses with 54.55% and 36.36% of the votes. As this appeals o my target audience I should use this sort of layout on the website I create for my magazine, as this appeals to the largest audience possible thus not limiting my target audience to specific individuals or groups.

These results show that red, blue and purple are extremely popular with the people that I survey as these categories appeal to a large proportion of my target audience. The colour red was selected by 59.09% of the people who completed it, blue with 54.55% and purple with 50%. This suggests that in order to appeal to my target audience I should include these colours. However, I will need to use them in a consistent and uniformed colour scheme throughout the whole site to avoid the site becoming to look like it is ‘tacky’ and too childish for the audience which I am aiming to appeal to.

These results show that in order to attract my target audience to my website I should include stories about the local entertainment in the Cornish area as 54.55% of the people who responded to my survey chose this option.

In conclusion with my website I am looking at a similar target audience to the one I was looking at for the billboard after completing target research on that. In order to appeal to this audience my website should feature certain things in order to attract them to it. This includes the colours red, blue and purple. It should also feature stories about music, film, computer games and local entertainment. The site should also use large images and small amounts of text as this is what appeals to my target audience. Finally, the site should use a horizontal navigation bar at the top of the page as this is what my target audience finds appealing.

Genre Institution For Website

There are many different programmes which are designed for the sole purpose of creating website. There are now many online web design sites where you can sign up and create a website online without needing to download the software. These offer a free service where you can design your own site, from free templates with  can be chosen to work around giving the site a certain style. These services includes services such as Wix.com, which are free to use once you sign up for a free membership or connect through a Google or Facebook account.

There are other services, such as Wordpress which are similar to the online services, which can be downloaded to your computer. Wordpress is very user friendly and makes web design simple to use. This service works from templates which can be downloaded and applied to the site. From here you can use a variety of 'Widgets' to apply content to the site. These can allow you to add things like scrolling images, titles and bodies of text. The advantage of using a service like this is that it creates clean and most likely bug free sites which look professional and are easy to use.

There is another programme which allows the user to use CSS files to create a website. This is a programme called Adobe Photoshop CS5. This software allows you download a CSS document for the internet and load it into the programme, which can then be edited visually. There are many free CSS templates which can be downloaded from the internet and they can be split into certain categories which makes it easy to find a template to suit the task the website is being generated for. This programme allows you to edit the site in a variety of ways. The first way in which the site can be edited is by using the 'design view'. This allow the user to edit the site visually so they can physically see the changes which they are making. The second view which the user can use is a 'Code' view. This allows the user to edit the site by using CSS coding to make the required changes. However, by using this view they do not get a clear image of what the site looks like when editing. The final view which can be used is a 'Split' view. This allows the user to edit the site using the code which makes it easier to clear any bugs which may be on the site whilst they are able to see the changes which they are making. This is possibly the most user friendly of the three views.

There are other programmes which are solely html based coding programmes, which does't give the user an idea of what the site looks like as they go along. The only idea they get if how the site looks is if they load it in an internet browser.

There are certain costs of of setting up a website. The first cost that you will need to pay for is the cost of purchasing a domain name. This is the web address in which people will put in the http bar in order to find your site. The average domain name will cost around £3 for a '.co.uk' address and £10 a year for a '.com' address. This has to be paid annually in order to keep the name and to keep the site running.  The next cost for a website is the cost of hosting the site. This is where a company provides server space for your website to be run on and covers the maintenance of the files stored on their servers. Many Internet Service Providers (ISP's) will provide web hosting services and will allow small businesses to host their site on the server for a cost. The average cost of web hosting is approximately £10-£20 per month.

Another cost that you may incur to set up a website is the cost of someone designing it for you or for the software to build your own site depending on the software you choose to use. The average cost to get someone to design a website for you is approximately £300 for a freelance web designer or for a more professional organisation it will cost around £350-£750. These companies will generally produce the site to a higher standard than most freelance designers. If they are looking to purchase Dreamweaver for the design of the site it will sent them back approximately £380.

Generally the website for regional magazines tend to use their site to advertise the print version or the digital version of their magazine, or to display content featured in their magazine to the audience which again will advertise the print or digital versions. They also use their websites to host their competitions which allows people to enter instantly.

Website analysis

In this post I will be analysing three regional magazine’s websites in order to work out the common codes and conventions that they all follow. This will allow me to have a good insight into the ways in which professional magazines use components of a website to attract their target audience. This will allow me to work out the best way to design my website so that it will relate and appeal to my target audience.

Coast Magazine

Coast magazine prides itself on being ‘the only magazine exclusively cover the coastline of the British Isles’. This means that they will have to attract a wide variety of readers who are interested in these Coastal regions of the UK.

This is the homepage of the Coast magazine website. The masthead on this webpage allows the website to easily relate to the printed copy of the magazine. This is because the same masthead is used on both, however the colours of it will vary on the different issues of the magazine. This masthead should stereotypically appeal to a younger audience. This is because it comes across as informal and can be seen as kind of ‘fun’. I can infer this from the use of all lowercase letters, which will not be used in a formal style masthead. The fact that this can be seen as ‘fun’ will help a young audience to relate to this website and magazine. However, this will not usually deter an older audience from reading this magazine, this means that Coasts target audience shouldn’t be limited to  people of a certain age.

This website also uses a lot of images on the homepage. This will attract peoples attention and displays the sort of content the magazine includes without the audience having to read anything to discover this information. This will appeal to a large audience but again is another way in which young people can be attracted to the website. This is because young people stereotypically don’t like a lot of reading as it is generally not seen as ‘fun’. However, the use of images will allow them to relate to the magazine as they get a clear image of what the magazine is about without them having to work to gather this information. This is good at attracting this audience because they stereotypically will prefer visual representation over text used to describe the same thing. The main image on the homepage shows boats docked outside a coastal town or village, with a series of headlands in the background. This will instantly show the audience that this magazine is about things coastal which allows the magazine to relate to its target audience. This image shows an aspect of coastal living which will be important to a lot of the target audience. This is because traditionally boats have been an important form of transports especially because we are an island nation. Boats have been used for hundreds of years for a variety of different uses. Nowadays one of the more popular uses for the kind of boats featured in the image is for recreational uses with activities such as fishing or boat trips around the coastline. As this magazine is a magazine included in the lifestyle genre this kind of image is important as it allows people to have an insight about life in these areas and what kind of activities the people who live in these areas get up to. This is important for the magazine as it allows them to attract their target audience.

The layout and the navigation of this magazine website is a lot more interesting than on other forms of websites. This is because its uses a tiled from of navigation instead of the more common and simple navigation bars seen on most websites. This again will allow this website to appeal to a younger audience on a subject which will not stereotypically appeal to them. This involves them suing the images on the homepage to navigate the website in oder to find certain articles and stories relating to the images they are linked to. This can be seen as ‘fun’ when compared to a simple navigation bar as it uses images rather than simple buttons which will attract a young audience as they will stereotypically find this appealing. However, to get to other sections of the site they use a combination of a navigation bar and a drop down menu.

This menu allows the audience to easily find article and stories which will appeal to them. This is because they have set out the stories into different categories and have put them in their own section on this menu. This will attract a large audience to the site and the magazine as they will be able to easily find out whether or not there are article which they are interested in. This will reduce frustration as there is clear navigation whereas on some sites navigation is so poor and complicated that the audience will often get frustrated and will often give up without finding what they were looking for. This is much more typical with an older audience as they are often a lot less experienced when it comes to technology as they didn’t have the sorts of technology which we have now in modern society. this makes it harder for them to use the technology to find what they want meaning that if the navigation isn’t simple they will simply get confused or lost and will often just give up. This will then make them less likely to read the magazine as they have got frustrated with the company and will often choose something else.

This site has many different pages. One of these pages is the ‘places’ page. This page looks like this:

As you can see the style of the website continues through to this page and has a very similar style to the homepage as the images layout and navigation is almost identical. This will often appeal to the audience because they feel a site is more professional if it follows the same theme throughout and they will have a good idea of how to continue to navigate the site as they have had experience with the previous pages they have used. The only real difference between the two pages except from the image is the colours used. On the homepage the only colour used in the body of the site is the colour white. The colour white connotes perfection which may be used to suggest the this site is perfect for people looking for a regional lifestyle magazine like this, therefore they may gain an advantage over their competitors. However, on the page shown above the colour green is the most common colour used on the body of the page. The colour green is one of the most restful colours to the human eye which is important to a magazine of this genre because if the colour used  is restful it connotes that the lifestyle they are portraying through a lifestyle magazine is restful, it should attract their target audience. This will stereotypically appeal to an older audience more than a younger one as a restful lifestyle is more appealing to an older audience as a young audience will stereotypically prefer a more exciting and adventurous lifestyle. As Hall said in 1904, “Youth must have excitement”. The colour green also connotes nature which allows the colours to relate with the theme behind the page as the page is about places in coastal areas.

The main image on this page features a picture of a camper van with a story about popular ‘campervan breaks’. This story will attract the magazines target audience because it is a regional lifestyle magazine which is designed to give the readers and insight into what life is like in these areas. This story will stereotypically appeal to people who don’t live in these areas but who are interested in them as it will give them a good idea of what the areas are like and what places they could visit to get a clear idea of what life is like in these areas.

Again this page follows the same style as the other two pages which I have previously analysed which again makes the site look more professional. However, on this page the colour orange is used in stead of green. The colour orange connotes energy and happiness. This colour is very good at relating to theme of the page as the page is about activities which are meant to be fun and exciting. This is important for people reading this magazine to get an insight into the sort of things they can do and expect in areas around the coast of the UK. This allows them to attract an audience outside of these areas of the UK meaning they have a larger customer base.

This page unlike the others which I have analysed don’t follow the same theme. This is because this is not designed to display any articles so that there is no need for sophisticated tile navigation because there is not enough content on this page to require it. Instead this page is used to give the audience the option to subscribe to the magazine.

Cornwall Today

This is a regional lifestyle magazine based in Cornwall. This magazine should appeal anyone who is interested in the Cornish area or culture or anyone who lives in this region. The homepage of this site is showed in the image above. Again this site uses a combination of a navigation bar and a tile navigation system which should appeal to their target audience and should be easy for everyone to navigate so shouldn’t cause any confusion or frustration. The difference with the way this one is laid out compared to the other one is that a lot more information is included in each tile. This will give the audience a clear image about what each article is about but this may not appeal to a young audience. Unlike Coast magazine there is a small description of each article underneath its image in their tile, which may not appeal to a young audience as they stereotypically don’t like doing a lot of reading and prefer visuals. This is because images are seen as more fun than a lot of text and as Hedge said ‘youth as fun’ which suggests that anything which can be seen as fun should appeal to a young audience.

This masthead is also very good at relating to the magazine to the website as this masthead is identical to the one used on the print version of the magazine but on the magazines it can be in different colours depending on the issue of the magazine. This masthead should be good at appealing to a wide variety of people as it can be seen as informal and fun, as well as being slightly more formal than mastheads featured on other magazine website such as Coasts magazine, which I analysed earlier. This masthead can be seen as informal because the ‘tagline’ is in all lowercase letters which is featured above the name of the magazine. Most magazines which are designed to come across as formal magazine because that is what appeal to their readers, will often choose to use either full caps of at least one capital letter at the start of each word. This means that this could appeal to a young audience because this can be seen as fun. This comes across as slightly formal because the first part of the name is in full capitals. The main colour used on this masthead is the colour black. The colour black connote power. This may be used to suggest that this magazine is a powerful magazine intros genre of magazine which may give it an advantage over its competitors.

The main colour except from white used on the body of the website is the colour grey. The colour grey is a mixture of white and black which connote perfection and power. This may be used to suggest that this magazine is the perfect magazine for people who want a lifestyle based in Cornwall. Other colours featured on the homepage includes blue and orange. The colour blue represents the sea, which is a very important part of Cornish life as the whole county is surrounded by the sea and the sea has been a very important part of life in Cornwall throughout history and even today in modern society. A lot of the industries in Cornwall have relied on the sea throughout history scubas the fishing industry which is still strong today with events like the Newquay Fish Festival still taking place. The colour orange connotes energy and happiness. These are important themes for a lifestyle magazine. This is because anyone interested in life in these regions will be interested in the excitement around areas like this with key events and fun activities in these areas. With fun and excitement will come energy and happiness.

The layout of the homepage is very busy which will attract different people for different reasons. It may attract a young audience beaches it is busy it may be seen as fun. This will stereotypically appeal to a young audience because as Hebdige said ‘youth as fun’. This means that anything which can be seen as fun should appeal to a young audience. However, the amount of text on the homepage may deter a young audience from reading this magazine. This is because a young audience don’t stereotypically find a lot of text appealing because they often see reading as ‘boring’ and therefore prefer a magazine website with a lot of visuals and images.

There are many images used on the homepage and every one of them represents life in Cornwall. They show a variety of different things which are key to life in Cornwall. They show a variety of things that would appeal to many different people. One of the images shows the inside of a home by the coast. This kind of article would appeal to people designing their homes by the sea and people who are interested in moving to an area such as this. A way in which they have chosen to relate the site to the printed version of the magazine is by using an image of the cover in the position which attracts peoples eye first. This may be used to encourage people to purchase the printed version of the magazine. This would appeal to an older audience most likely because they will stereotypically prefer reading a physical printed version rather than a downloadable digital version.

This drop down menu layout is similar to the one used on Coast magazines website but it includes a lot more detail. This will make it even easier for people to find an article which interests them as the categories are a lot more specific. This should appeal to everyone because there should be not time wasted trying to get to something interesting for the reader. This makes the website come across as more professional making them more likely to purchase the magazine because they don’t become frustrated with the company. Another way in which this homepage for this magazine’s website is similar to Coast magazines website is that it features a piece of advertising in the top right corner. This will probably make the use of a website financially viable because they don’t make money from people viewing the website and because of the website fewer people will probably purchase the magazine. They will make money through advertising which means that any money that may be lost from the purchase of the magazine is made back through the advertising.

Like with Coast Magazines site the design and theme continues through to the feature pages which display the article of the magazine. This makes the magazine’s site seem more professional and would stereotypically appeal to the target audience as a constant theme helps them relate better to the site. By using the same theme and design the navigation of the site should become easier for the audience as they would have had experience in oder to get to the page they wanted so they would be able to easily navigate the site as nothing would have changed. This limits the confusion and stress caused by navigating the site.
Another similarity that this site has to Coast magazines, is the use of a subscription page. This allows people viewing the website to easily subscribe so that they can receive the magazine every time a new issue comes out. This means they are more likely to get more people to purchase their magazine.

Cornwall Life Magazine

This magazine is another regional magazine based in the Cornish region and is a magazine in the lifestyle genre. The homepage of the site is shown above. Again this site like the other two which i have analysed uses a combination of tiles, navigation bar and drop down menus. The homepage features a bunch of images which are relevant to Cornish life. This helps the magazine to relate to it’s target audience, as this is the kind of content which will appeal to them and attract them to this magazine website. The images on this site come across as more relevant than other images featured on other sites as they seem more relevant and there is something in the images that should appeal to everyone thus not limiting their target audience. The drop down menus on this site are more complicated and sophisticated than the ones featured not the other two sites. This looks like this:

These drop down menus are more specific to each category and allows the user to easily select sub categories within the category which appeals to them. Therefore, they won’t waste time searching for pages which aren’t what they are interested in. However, some people especially older people may find this navigation too complicated and may be frustrated and simply give up setting the magazine in a bad light meaning they are less likely to purchase the magazine.

The masthead with this magazine is very simple and doesn’t really give much away about the kinds of people they are trying to attract. Again the only colour used on it is the colour black which connotes power, which suggests that they also feel that they are a strong force in the regional lifestyle magazine industry.

The style of this magazine also continues throughout the pages and the navigation remains the same. This again makes the site look more professional and should limit confusion.

Like the other magazines this one has a link to a subscription page but this takes you to an external website which makes them come across as unprofessional.

Construction of My Billboard

For my Billboard the first thing which I had to do was create a new document in Photoshop. I wanted the Billboard to be a reasonable size so I opened a new document with an A3 size and then changed to orientation so that the canvas was of a landscape orientation. After this I put in an image which I wanted to use as the background for my Billboard. I then resized it so that it took up the whole canvas.

The next step in construction of my billboard was to sharpen my image to improve the overall picture quality and to apply a range of filter to make the image appear a higher quality after it had been resized.

I then added a text layer which would be the base for the masthead which I wished to create. The font I chose was Cooper Std. I chose this font because it seemed fun and would appeal to my target audience. I also needed a bubbly font in order to get the text effect which I wanted to achieve at the end of construction.

I then made this text transparent and then applied some different filters to give it this effect. I chose to do this because it uses the natural colour of the water as the background for the text. I chose to do this because I felt that my target audience will see this and be attracted to my magazine. This was because youth will stereotypically look for anything which can be seen as fun, as displayed by Hebdige's theory 'youth as fun'.

I then decided to add a splash effect onto the background behind the text so that it would create the effect that the text is causing the splash. I feel this makes the title appear more interesting and exciting which is something which I feel would attract my target audience. This is because as Hall said in 1904, "Youths must have excitement". this suggests that anything which can come across and portray excitement should appeal to young people.

I then chose to add a slogan and the date of release. I thought the slogan was a good idea because it made the billboard seem more fun and interesting which would be vital in attracting my target audience. The date of release was important to include because my audience would need to know when the magazine was available so that they could read it when it came out.

After receiving some feedback from my target audience I came to the decision that I needed to make some changes to my billboard in order to appeal to them better.

I then decided to overlay an image of the sand which I had taken during a photoshop and cut the out the iconic coastline of Cornwall, in order to show the masthead for the billboard and part of the image below. I feel this works well because it can help my audience relate to my billboard as they will be able to instantly recognise the shape of Cornwall and instantly relate my magazine to this region. I chose to remove the text from the bottom of the billboard because this sort of layout seemed boring and would not appeal to my audience.

I then in a large, blocky font placed the tagline for my magazine is the space to the left hand side of my masthead. I used this font because it will be seen as fun by my target audience and will consequently attract them to my products. As the background in this text I chose to use an action shot of a surfer at a typical beach in the Cornish region. This is something which my audience will fin exciting and as the media theories Hall said "youths must have excitement".

Next I chose to include an image of my magazine cover in the bottom left corner of my magazine. I did this so that my audience could easily relate my billboard and my magazine, making it more likely for them to purchase any version of my magazine.

Finally I added a piece of Cornish slang to reaffirm the points that the magazine is based in the Cornish region and that it is aimed at a young target audience. Then I added the release date for this magazine as I thought this would be important information to anyone wishing the purchase my magazine.

Lighting Research for the Billboard and Website

Lighting

By far the most common shot type used in magazines of the lifestyle genre, are extreme long shots showing landscapes of certain areas. There are many different ways in which I can use lighting to give my shots certain effects. The first type of lighting which I could use is side lighting.

In this type of lighting the source of light comes from the side. This type is very good at creating a long shadow and contrast. It can also add depth to the image.

This may work well on the Billboard for my magazine as I will be able to interest my audience by attracting them to the billboard by using an image of an area which I wish to talk about with a lighting effect such as side lighting which may interest my audience as it will add depth and contrast to my image.

It would also be suitable for the website for similar reasons as the website as it will draw the audience to the site.

This kind of lighting puts the sun in front of the image and uses it to create so stunning lighting effects. Again this is something which I may consider using on my Billboard, again to attract my audience to my magazine.

Photography Research For Billboard

The image used on the Billboard above shows a close up of the product they are trying to advertise. This makes the product the most important part of the billboard. This suggests that I should do something similar when it comes to designing my own Billboard, which suggests that I may want to use an image of the front cover of the print version of my magazine, on the Billboard. However, this may not work for my product as it is a completely different type of product which they are trying to advertise.

One part of the convention set by this Billboard is that the main image makes up the background for the Billboard. This is something I will probably follow when it comes to designing my own magazine as I feel this will work we'll with the style of magazine which I am creating. By using an image as a background I will be able to use a landscape image of one of the areas I am going to talk about inside of my regional lifestyle magazine.
